Big Al's, the Milpitas Regular
So far the Milpitas mixers have been at Big Al's, once in May and again in August. Both were general mixers rather than an age edition, which means a mixed room of adults who simply wanted a night out that did not involve a phone.
If you have never been to one, here is the short version. There is no program to follow. You arrive any time inside the three hour window, say hi to the Singles Mingle host or just find a group, and start talking. Some people stay for the whole stretch and some leave after an hour with a couple of new numbers. Either way is a good night.
That loose format is the difference between a mixer and speed dating. Nobody rings a bell or hands you a card. You can talk to the same person for forty minutes if the conversation is good, or move on politely if it is not.
Riding BART or Light Rail Into Milpitas
Milpitas is one of the easier South Bay cities to reach without a car. Milpitas BART station sits by the Great Mall and links straight up the East Bay line to Hayward and beyond. The station shares a transit center with VTA light rail, so riders from parts of San Jose can connect without driving at all.
If you do drive, both I-880 and I-680 have Milpitas exits, and Highway 237 cuts west toward Sunnyvale and Mountain View. Calaveras Boulevard is the main east to west road across town. Once you are off the freeway, the city is a short drive across, which is one less thing to think about before you walk in.
Taking transit has one extra perk: nobody has to be the designated driver. Check the venue address on the event page and match it to the closest station or bus line.
If You Are Coming Alone
Coming to a Milpitas mixer by yourself is completely fine. That is not a sign that something is off. It is a normal way to do it. The venues are public, the room is full of people who also came to meet someone new, and the atmosphere stays fun and relaxed.
A few things make the first few minutes easier. Show up a little after the start, when there is already a buzz in the room. Get a drink so your hands have something to do. Look for the Singles Mingle host and say hi. Then let it unfold. Nerves usually fade a lot faster than you expect.
If you want to know who is behind all this and why she started it, read about Adeline. The short answer is that she got tired of online dating and wanted a way for people to meet face-to-face again.
